great sand dunes

this is one of my most favorite natural places we have visited so far.  we arrived in the dark of night and woke to a most surreal view of sand dunes bumping up to snow covered mountain peaks. it was breathtaking! theses dunes have been here for hundred of years. there are stories of settlers coming across the country in wagon trains and loosing their way in the dunes and never coming out. as i walked up to the top to look over the vast expanse of sand i could see how that could happen, the color and the shifting sand was quite mesmerizing and i could see how one could loose ones sense of direction.  once at the top over looking the thirty plus miles of rolling sand, i felt like i was at the top of the world, on every side i could see snow covered mountains in the distance, some very close, some very far away across the san luis valley.  i prayed and meditated and danced a dance of joy and gratitude to mother earth, father sky and to myself for being able to share a special moment, alone on the top of the world.
